People around the world face violence and inequality – and sometimes torture, even execution – because of who they love, how they look, or who they are. Sexual orientation and gender identity are integral aspects of our selves and should never lead to discrimination or abuse. Stichting Out & Proud works for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people of African descent's rights, with activists representing a multiplicity of identities and issues. We document and expose abuses based on sexual orientation and gender identity especially in countries where Homosexuality is demonised – including torture, killing and executions, arrests under unjust laws, unequal treatment, censorship, medical abuses, discrimination in health and jobs and housing.
Concerns about violations of freedom of association, assembly, and expression are increasing in many African Countries. For example in Uganda the authorities obstruct access to basic human rights and many LGBTI people have faced arrest, detention, and torture. Further more Uganda a new nongovernmental organizations bill includes vague “special obligations” of independent groups -- provisions that could make organizations vulnerable to politically motivated charges. Although the Anti-Homosexuality Act was overturned by a constitutional challenge in 2014, government officials continue to voice their support for it.
